When staff at The Arc of the Treasure Coast's afterschool program committed to strengthening the quality of their programming, they recognized that meaningful change would require more than a single professional development session. Together, we designed a learning series intentionally aligned with the Palm Beach County Program Quality Assessment (PBC-PQA) Pyramid of Quality, allowing staff to build foundational practices before progressing to more advanced youth engagement strategies.
The series began with Creating Safe Spaces, where staff explored how emotional safety serves as the foundation for every positive youth experience. Through interactive activities, role-playing and reflection, participants examined how welcoming rituals, welcoming language, proactive behavior supports and culturally responsive interactions contribute to environments where every young person feels valued, respected and ready to participate.

Building on that foundation, the learning shifted toward Fostering Growth Mindset. Staff practiced coaching techniques that encouraged reflection, persistence and problem-solving by replacing rescuing behaviors with thoughtful questions and providing specific, non-evaluative feedback that recognized effort and strategy. These practices empowered staff to help young people view challenges as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles to success.
The series concluded with Fostering Teamwork, where participants applied the previous learning by designing experiences that promote authentic collaboration among youth. Through hands-on challenges, staff distinguished between simple group work and true teamwork, explored strategies for creating shared goals and interdependent roles and redesigned activities that intentionally build communication, collaboration and group-processing skills.

By structuring the workshops as a progression rather than isolated sessions, staff developed a deeper understanding of how quality practices build upon one another. The interactive nature of the workshops encouraged participants to share experiences, reflect on their own practice and learn from one another in a supportive environment.
Participant Diana Song reflected on the experience by saying:
"I look forward to and truly enjoyed attending the Prime Time workshops with Mr. Daniel. I love that we share ideas and insights with one another - 'we listen & don't judge.’ It's not always easy hearing one another's ideas and thought processes, but Mr. Daniel makes sure to take the time to help us understand the information presented. I also enjoy the interaction with the different workshops. The interaction makes it fun and engaging. The workshops have helped me gain insight into my position and given me the tools I need to be successful in my work."
The programs’ leadership also recognized the impact the series had on staff development. Jacklyn Coore shared:
"Daniel is fun, energetic and engaging in his workshops. He brings creativity and innovative thinking to every session, making the experience both enjoyable and meaningful for our staff. I always try to provide my team with as many training and professional development opportunities as possible, and I was so grateful that Daniel offered this workshop series to us this year. We truly can't thank him enough for sharing his knowledge, enthusiasm and passion. His training made a lasting impact, and we sincerely appreciate the time and effort he invested in our team."
This series demonstrated that sustained professional learning is most effective when it is intentional, interactive and connected to a larger quality improvement framework. By progressing through the Pyramid of Quality over the course of the school year, The Arc of the Treasure Coast's staff strengthened their ability to create emotionally safe environments, foster resilience and growth in young people, and facilitate meaningful collaboration, ultimately enhancing the quality of experiences they provide every day.
