Palm Beach County's Unsung Heroes Are Excited to be Back to Afterschool

As a new school year gets underway, afterschool practitioners are returning with renewed energy, fresh ideas and a shared commitment to creating experiences where every young person can thrive.

Staff from the Franklin Academy Afterschool Programs in Boynton Beach and Palm Beach Gardens came together before the school year began to refresh their understanding of positive youth development practices and explore new ways to strengthen their programs. Through hands-on activities and small-group experiences, staff stepped into different roles, worked toward shared goals, and practiced planning, reflection and collaboration.

At C.O. Taylor/Kirklane Elementary Afterschool Program, staff (pictured below) also gathered to strengthen the practices that support positive youth development, led by Prime Time Quality Advisor Anita Winkis.

The training sparked meaningful reflection on the importance of youth voice and choice. Several staff members shared that they gained a deeper understanding of the value of giving young people meaningful choices and, just as importantly, taking the time to listen to what young people actually want to do.

One staff member reflected on the importance of involving young people in establishing group norms and expectations. Others highlighted how creating opportunities for youth voice can lead to stronger engagement, greater ownership and better outcomes for young people.

The sessions also reinforced that positive relationships begin with the adults who create and nurture them. Staff took time to affirm one another and recognize their colleagues’ contributions. For many, simply having teammates pause to acknowledge and appreciate the work they accomplish together was a meaningful part of the experience.

Most importantly, staff enjoyed learning together and left with practical ideas they could put into action immediately.

As the new school year begins, these afterschool teams are ready to put their learning into practice, finding new ways to listen to young people, provide meaningful choices, build positive relationships and create environments where every young person has the opportunity to thrive.
