Belle Glade Dancer Takes Center Stage in Her Afterschool Program
Daniella Mena, a spirited 12-year-old with arthrogryposis, found her place in Ascension 33’s FIT HUB program, a free offering through Prime Time Palm Beach County. This was her first time participating, and she was both excited and apprehensive about joining the end-of-program showcase. With joint stiffness limiting her movement, the fast-paced production seemed daunting.
Through unwavering encouragement and thoughtful modifications, Daniella embraced the challenge. She tackled intricate choreography, determined not to let her disability define her. Rather than seeking exceptions, she pushed herself to learn every routine, including the most energetic dance pieces. Her dedication to body conditioning and aerobics was inspiring, and she completed every assessment with determination.
Daniella's journey was not hers alone; her peers rallied around her, offering support and encouragement. Together, they forged bonds that blossomed into a sense of belonging. On the night of the showcase at the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, Daniella shined brightly. She transitioned seamlessly between dance pieces, captivating an audience of more than 300, including her family and friends, who were in awe of her performance.
The impact of the FIT HUB program on Daniella was transformative. Once uncertain of her abilities, she now dances with confidence, knowing she can overcome any obstacle. Her progress has not only improved her joint movement but has also reinforced her belief that she can achieve anything with intention. Daniella’s journey is a powerful testament to how FIT HUB empowers youth, promoting overall well-being and fostering a community where everyone belongs.
